Christmas Eve is famously known as a date holiday here in Japan, while Christmas dinner is a time for "Christmas cake" and KFC. We have in the past used Christmas Eve as an excuse to go out to dinner (but hey, so do my parents and, according to them in recent years, lots of folks in the USA). This year, blessed with the responsibility of caring for a 5+ week-old, we skiopped the date part but battled long lines at SOGO department store for smoked turkey and chicken legs and chocolate cake. Here are some photos:
Nice. Congratz on your 5+ month old baby. Fun time!. Christmas is not the same in Japan compared back in the USA. We went out yesterday to Ginza and came back home a little late to make dinner. So we decided to have KFC. Since KFC is a Christmas tradition here, the KFC we went to were sold out of regular menu. Reservation was only taken. We were not going to buy a 4,000yen KFC dinner for just the 2 of us and a 1 1/2 yr old boy. Instead, we went to the market next to KFC and bought chicken and potatoes tots.

Thanks ducsu. She is five weeks old actually!!! Very tiny still. I am glad you got to see the Tokyo midtown illumination and eat outback at least--per your blog!
DeleteThis is my dream Xmas dinner! My extended family in Japan makes me slave over the stove that day. Since I'm a foreigner they think whatever I cook up is "authentic." Little do they know, I need a compass to find my way around the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteLol, sorry about your Christmas dinner cooking predicament. Tell them, "In America, many families buy cooked turkeys and ham. 'Authentic' means store-bought!" Old habits die hard, though. It may be too late now.
DeleteUh-oh. I'm so late with this comment that I'll have to talk about osechi-ryōri rather than your Xmas dinner! (>_<)
ReplyDeleteI've decided I'm going to be lazy this year and buy everything at a department store. Except, maybe, o-zōni. ;)
Looking forward to the osechi ryouri piece!!! I love kamaboko. Mochi in soup for breakfast on New Year's is so awesome, too.
